Cayla joins TEDxSalem as their third artist in residence.

Assistant Professor Cayla Skillin-Brauchle in the Department of Art has been named artist in residence for TEDxSalem 2018. Cayla will create an art installation that illustrates the theme, “Through the Looking Glass.” Her artwork will be featured as the onstage backdrop for TEDxSalem on Jan. 6 and will be the subject of her TEDxSalem talk.

During the six-month residency, Cayla will work with TEDxSalem organizers to design an installation that emphasizes shifting perspectives framed by these questions: How do we envision a different future? How can we practice alternative ways of looking and living? As part of the residency, she will have access to studio space at Salem Art Association’s Art Annex in Bush Park to create the installation and participate in artist talks and workshops in their Community Arts Education program.

About the award: TEDxSalem is a volunteer-organized event that curates “ideas worth spreading” in the form of short, captivating talks from the Salem community. The artist in residence program is a collaboration with the Salem Art Association to support local artists with flexible studio space and to build relationships between artists and the community. Each year, TEDxSalem showcases one local artist who interprets the annual theme in an installation for the main stage.
