The Studio Art Department’s Third Annual Student Juried Art Show was a huge success. We had over 100 submissions from 30 artists, and from those submissions, 31 pieces were selected to be in the show. From the 31 pieces in the show, juror Michael Hernandez selected one Best in Show, and three Honorable Mentions.
About the show, Hernandez said: "You never know what you’re going to walk in and see in terms of the amount of work that was submitted, the range of work—which this is pretty great, spanning quite the range of media!"
When speaking of Best in Show winning piece ARMOR (too close) by Ella Mernyk, Michael said "When I first saw this piece, it was indicative of showing an end in mind, starting with three dimensional piece, thinking it through and creative a narrative with the photography included with the work. There was an edginess to the photography, an editorial-type narrative to how it’s presented. These pieces are just so strong."
The Honorable Mention winners were: Emma Stocker the cyanotype series Cryptids; Sinead Cahill for the digital video installation Unravel; and Matt Jensen for the painted silicone and zine Hello, Pretty You.
