Important Student Policies, Resources, and Information

Contact: Heather Kropf

We have highlighted some important policies, reporting options, safety tips and resources available to you.

Dear Students,

We hope your fall semester is off to a great start and you are enjoying your first few weeks of the semester. Your safety, well-being, and success are our priorities at Willamette University and we want to ensure you have the information and support resources you need to make the most of your time on campus. We have highlighted some important policies, reporting options, safety tips and resources available to you.

Important policies

Whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student, live on campus or off, you are responsible for upholding Willamette’s Student Code of Conduct. The University Title IX policy has been shared in the September 3rd Today@Willamette, but here are some additional important policies to review:

  • Alcoholic Beverage and Controlled Substance and/or Drug policies — students must be 21 years of age to possess or consume alcohol, and cannabis is not allowed on university property despite its use being legal in Oregon for those over 21 years of age.
  • Harmful Behavior and Disruptive Conduct — we expect all students to demonstrate care and respect for members of our community and their access to their educational experiences.
  • Missing Student: If someone has been missing for more than 24 hours, please report it to a staff member or Campus Safety. Review the Missing Student Notification policy for more information.

Reporting options

We encourage all students to report concerns or incidents that need attention. We have multiple reporting options that are routed to the appropriate staff for follow-up.

  • The CARE Report is designed to initiate follow-up to support a student’s general well-being and/or academic success.
  • The Bias Report initiates follow-up to reported acts of bias or campus climate concerns.
  • The Sexual Misconduct Report initiates follow-up to reported acts of gender-based harassment, discrimination, sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence.
  • The Community Concern/Incident Report initiates follow-up to reported concerns about campus issues, an incident that occurred on campus or violations of campus policies.

General Safety

Campus Safety officers provide 24-hour coverage of the campuses and can offer assistance as needed. We encourage you to put the Campus Safety numbers in your phone: Salem Campus: (503) 370-6911; Portland Campus: (503) 621-2061.

Other tips

  • Carry your WU ID, room key (if you live on-campus), and phone at all times
  • Lock windows and doors when you leave your home or residence hall room
  • Don’t let people you don’t know trail you into academic or residential buildings
  • Report all safety concerns or suspicious activity to Campus Safety
  • Use a buddy system when walking around. You can also call campus safety for an escort or use the Willamette Lyft program.

Support

If you are struggling with emotional or mental health concerns — anything from feeling homesick or anxious to other concerns — please contact a campus resource.

  • If you live on campus, talking with a Resident Advisor or Residence Life Coordinator in Salem or the Assistant Director of Student Affairs at PNCA can be helpful.
  • If your concerns are more urgent mental health concerns, you can access a crisis counselor by calling WUTalk, serviced by ProtoCall 24/7 at (503) 375-5353. The call is free and confidential.
  • Bishop Wellness Center offers free University counseling services for all students. Call (503) 370-6471 to make an appointment.
  • Willamette also partners with Uwill: a free, independent telehealth counseling service for students. Register and book your first session here.
  • The Director of the Gender Resouce and Advocacy Center and Confidential Advocate, Lisa Logan, and the student Sexual Assault Response Advocates (SARAs) serve as confidential resources for any student who has experienced sexual harassment, sexual assault, or intimate partner violence.
  • In Salem, the Assistant Dean for Community Care and Inclusion, Justin Leibowitz, is available to assist and support students who are experiencing difficulty, whether that be academic, personal, or interpersonal, as does Jackson Seeymayer who serves as the Director of Student Care and Success on the PNCA campus.

Additionally, we encourage you to review the Student Affairs Resource Guide. This guide provides valuable information on the various resources available to you throughout your time at Willamette, including how to access support services and connect with key offices on campus.
