Director of Indigenous Partnership Programs-Chemawa Indian School-Salem-Keizer School District

Vellena V. Howard Director of the Chemawa-Willamette Partnership Program serves as a liaison bringing direct oversight and support to the established and growing relationship between the Chemawa Indian School and WU while also developing Willamette’s partnership with the Salem-Keizer School District’s Indian Education Program.  As administrator she works in concert with the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the Vice President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion to bring success to Native American students, Native American-focused programming, and outreach activities and projects at Willamette.  As instructor and supervisor of IDS 205 and IDS 396 she extends support to ensure effective tutoring/mentorship/internship experience to undergraduate students serving at Chemawa and in the school district.  

She comes to the Willamette community with over 25 years of experience of partnering and empowering Native American and cross-cultural communities spanning from Arizona, Oregon, and Alaska through tutoring, mentoring, and facilitating programs.  Her desire to instill a love of learning to all ages has encompassed public, private, adult education, and home-school environments.

She serves on the Native American Advisory Council (NAAC) and is Dine’ Athabaskan.
