Service, Society, and Self (S³) introduces incoming first year and transfer Willamette University students to campus and the Salem community through community and civic engagement experiences. Participants will live together in community and partner with a local non-profit organization to learn about the challenges facing our neighbors while joining in a service project that helps to further their mission. Specifically, we will learn with and from a non-profit organization that provides support for “new neighbors,” individuals and families with designated refugee status. Additional community service partners may be added depending on student participation numbers.
Together, we will learn more deeply about the circumstances and challenges our neighbors are facing and how direct action and advocacy play an essential role in meeting our neighbors' needs. Additionally, we will explore how to better understand our power to effect change within our communities.
