Covid off Campus

Expected Steppin' Out 2021 Experience

Oregon is full of gorgeous, breathtaking outdoor locations on and off-campus. Steppin’ Out provides the opportunity for you, other incoming students, to make connections and grow via a safe yet challenging common experience in the outdoors. Your experience will begin when you first arrive on campus where we will do both check in’s and gear checks. After everything is accounted for we will provide transportation to an outdoor location that will be our base camp for the remainder of the experience.

Each morning we will prepare breakfast on-site, adequately prepared for all dietary needs. Lunch fixings will be made on sight and packed for the day as we explore Oregon's many outdoor hiking trails, and other experiences. Each day hike ranges from 3-6 miles. Depending on your perception, the hikes range from easy to moderate. Participants will be split into small groups for these hikes, this provides the opportunity for you to become well acquainted with the other participants and leaders on the hike. With well-trained leaders, you will be supported throughout the trip no matter your needs. Once finished with the day hike you will return to base camp where we will engage in small activities, providing you the chance to meet new people and build community in more ways.

During the evenings at base camp, food will be made on-site and will be adequately prepared for all dietary needs. As the night darkens, fires will be made as a community gathering point (as long as burn bans do not exist). For sleeping arrangements, each participant will receive their own bivy sack to sleep in under the stars, however, if you prefer another method that can be discussed. This is the general structure for each day, with hidden surprises to be uncovered later as regulations change due to COVID.

As our experience wraps up, we will pack everything out from base camp and return to campus. The final night will be spent on campus with an activity to get you orientated on campus before Opening Days begins the next day.

Covid on Campus Program Experience (Fall 2020 example programing)

If the current public health situation changes for the worse, this is what should be expected of the Steppin' Out program, similar to the program in fall 2020.

Oregon is full of gorgeous, outdoor locations on and around campus. Steppin’ Out provides the opportunity for you and other incoming students to make connections and grow via a common experience outdoors. Your experience will begin when you first arrive on campus where you will unpack your stuff in the residence hall that will be yours for the rest of the year. During this time there will also be small games that people can join at any time. You can practice getting food from Goudy (the school dining hall) for lunch before we all go together for dinner. The first day will finish with a small activity and an optional campfire to meet other participants.

Each day we will explore one of the many outdoor spaces in Salem, including Bush Pasture Park, Waterfront City park, Minto Brown, and Wallace Marine Park. We will hike an average of 3 miles on flat land, most of the time paved. Participants will be split into small groups for these hikes, this provides the opportunity for you to become well acquainted with the other participants and leaders on the hike. The day will also consist of on-campus activities so that you can become more acquainted with Willamette and build community with other people outside of your hiking group. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will all be provided by Goudy.

As the night darkens, fires will be made as a community gathering point (as long as burn bans do not exist) for participants together and have unstructured time to get to know one another. Participants and leaders have the option to sleep on the quad in sleeping bags under the stars. However, there is also the option to spend the night in your residence hall room. This is the general structure for each day, with hidden surprises to be uncovered later. The experience will wrap up the night before Opening Days.
