Below you will find an example of a detailed schedule. All our programs are dependent upon what mother nature gives us and because of that, it can be subject to change. There may be two backpacking groups and due to Oregon State Recreational restrictions, our groups will be under 8-11 participants in size. If we have two groups interested in backpacking, the groups will interact the first night and during the middle of the backpacking experience as they pass each other going the opposite direction; this will allow for larger group interactions. Depending on the success of the group, you may be able to attend the last day at Neskowin Beach with all Steppin’ Out participants. This itinerary is going in the counterclockwise direction. If we have two groups, one group will be going in the reverse direction of this experience below

Schedule

Day 1
  • Move-in day into your housing assignment given to you from Residence Life and set up your room quickly (see schedule here)
  • The Steppin’ Out Program Begins
  • Lunch
  • Prepare for the trip on campus, activities, and explore campus
  • Travel to national forest land near the start of the trail for camping with your team
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders
  • Learning to use your backpacking equipment
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 2
  • Wake up and prepare for the day
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Prepare and eat breakfast
  • Morning activities
  • Drive to the trailhead of Burnt Lake
  • Enjoy the 4-5 mile backpacking portion to Burnt Lake with your classmates
  • Snacks and lunch on the trail
  • Finish the backpacking portion and set up camp in and around Burnt Lake
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders at camp
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 3
  • Wake up and prepare for the day
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Prepare and eat breakfast
  • Morning activities
  • Enjoy the 5 to 6-mile backpacking portion along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to your second camping destination with the backdrop of Mt. Hood.
  • Snacks and lunch on the trail
  • Finish the backpacking portion and set up camp along the PCT
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders at camp
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 4
  • Wake up and prepare for the day
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Prepare and eat breakfast
  • Morning activities
  • Enjoy the 6-7mile backpacking portion along the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to start and pass Ramona Falls today for a mountain dip as you move toward your third camping destination
  • Snacks and lunch on the trail
  • Finish the backpacking portion and set up camp along the Ramona Falls Trail.
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders at camp
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 5 (Last day, sad, we know)
  • Wake up and prepare for the day
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Prepare and eat breakfast
  • Morning activities
  • Enjoy the last 3-4 miles backpacking portion as you come out of the Ramona Falls trailhead today.
  • Snacks and lunch on the trail
  • Finish the backpacking portion and depending on time, your group may work to get to the coast or just return to campus for showers.
  • On-campus your group will prep dinner
  • Evening closing activities with a fire pit on campus with smores and all groups
  • Say your goodbyes to the end of the experience
  • Sleep in your own room tonight to prepare for the start of Opening Days (new student orientation) tomorrow
