Below you will find an example of a detailed schedule. All our programs are dependent upon what mother nature gives us and because of that, it can be subject to change. There may be two backpacking groups and due to Oregon State Recreational restrictions, our groups will be a maximum of 12 total hikers in size. If we have two groups interested in backpacking, the groups will interact on campus in the preparation for departure and potentially during the experience as they pass each other on the trail. If we have two groups, one group will be going in the reverse direction of this experience below.

Schedule

Day 1
  • Move-in day into your housing assignment given to you from Residence Life and set up your room quickly (see schedule here)
  • Lunch at Goudy Commons
  • On-campus activities with all Jump Start groups
  • Separate into program groups - Steppin’ Out Backpacking
  • Travel to national forest land near the trailhead
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders
  • Learning to use your backpacking equipment
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 2
  • Wake up and prepare for the day
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Prepare and eat breakfast
  • Morning activities
  • Drive to the trailhead 
  • Enjoy the initial backpacking leg with your classmates
  • Snacks and lunch on the trail
  • Finish the backpacking portion and set up camp in wilderness site
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders at camp
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 3
  • Wake up and prepare for the day
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Prepare and eat breakfast
  • Morning activities
  • Enjoy the next backpacking portion to your second camping destination 
  • Snacks and lunch on the trail
  • Finish the backpacking portion and set up camp in wilderness site 
  • Afternoon and evening activities prepared by your leaders at camp
  • Cook and enjoy dinner with your team
  • Fall asleep under the stars while bonding and talking with your new classmates
Day 4
  • Early wake up and prepare for summit hike
  • Break down camp and pack up your packs
  • Eat trail breakfast
  • Enjoy a short hike up to the Chinidere mountain summit
  • Additional snacks on the trail
  • Return to campsite and complete backpacking to the vehicles
  • Return to campus, stopping at viewpoints as able
  • Return gear and supplies at Montag 
  • Return your personal stuff to your rooms and showers in your dorms!
  • Dinner at Goudy Commons with Basecamp group
  • Evening closing activities with all Jump Start groups
  • Say your goodbyes to the end of the experience
  • Sleep in your own room tonight to prepare for the start of Opening Days (new student orientation) tomorrow
