Breaking the Bubble: Connecting Scholarship, Public Service and Social Justice
“Breaking the Bubble: Connecting Scholarship, Public Service and Social Justice” has been designed to provide Willamette students and Salem community leaders with an opportunity to connect, learn about each other’s work, and discuss the relationship between scholarship, public service, and social justice.
Student Scholarship Recognition Day
Wednesday, April 17, 2013
First, students will be presenting on their research, fieldwork, projects and partnerships with community organizations throughout the day at the Student Scholarship Recognition Day. This is a daylong program filled with an array of diverse research topics, presentations and discussion panels (for more information on the SSRD Program).
“Breaking the Bubble” networking event
3:30-5:00pm in the Alumni Lounge of the University Center
Secondly, students, faculty, staff and community leaders will gather together for the “Breaking the Bubble” networking event from 3:30-5:00pm in the Alumni Lounge of the University Center for conversation, appetizers and refreshments. This event will be an opportunity for community leaders to share what their work looks like, how they got involved, and how it is relevant to social justice efforts and public service work.
This event will provide students with a perspective of what a career in social justice can look like as well as how these two things can be interrelated. Additionally, community members will gain an insight into who Willamette students are and how they live up to the University’s motto, “not onto ourselves alone are we born.” Ideally the connections made here will extend beyond the time and scope of the event to become long lasting, mutually beneficial relationships between Willamette University and the Salem community.
