Personal Interests

I am the Dempsey Endowed Chair of Environmental Politics and Law in the Department of Environmental Science at Willamette University.  In the department my teaching includes courses in environmental and natural resources policy (ENVS 341), forest management (ENVRS 380), environmental ethics (ENVS 304), and social system/natural system interactions (ENVS 120). My research and teaching focuses on the nexus of human communities and complex ecosystems, and my publications include work on federal forest policy, Western water policy, and environmental values. I have also worked as a Congressional Fellow in the United State Senate on forestry and energy issues, and continue to consult on state and federal forest policy.  In my spare time I advocate for social and environmental sustainability, help manage the family forest and farm in the Oregon coast range, and enjoy running and hiking.
