Here are your groups for the Heritage School visit on Monday.
Everyone got his or her first, second, or third choice of activity.
Song: Mizuho, Risa
-
Choose one song -- or maybe two. Make a big poster with the notes and words in romaji, kanji/hiragana/katakana, and English.
-
Explain what the song is -- for example, "A song all Japanese children sign at home." or "A song children learn at school." or "A song we sing at a __________ festival."
-
Sing the song for the children a couple of times, then help them sing it several times.
Fukuwarai: Kohei, Honami, Tomomi
-
Make the fukuwarai face and parts.
-
Teach the children the names of the parts of the face in Japanese. Write the Japanese (romaji and kanji) and English names on each part. Have them practice before you play.
Origami: Nozomi, Kana, Kuriya
-
Choose two or three simple things to teach.
-
Make posters with instructions.
-
Teach the Japanese words for what you teach: kabuto, kikker, or whatever. Write these names so students can see them and say them.
Shuji: Hitomi, Kanami, Marina
-
Decide what the students will write and make patterns for them to copy.
-
Teach the English and Japanese meaning for what they write.
Greetings and simple words: Lisa, Ayaka, Masanori
-
Choose about 8 or 10 words and expressions for the students to learn. Give them situations and examples: greeting a friend, greeting a teacher, saying goodbye to parents, etc.
-
Make a poster with the Japanese words in romaji, the kanji and hiragana, and the English meaning.
- You must do more than have the students sit and repeat. Perhaps have the students dress in yukatas and give them "roles" with signs on them in Japanese and English: sensei/teacher and student. Or write a simple drama. Be creative.
