Biography

Hailing from a small town in Eastern Oregon, Dr. Jed Rembold attended Linfield University and graduated in 2007 with dual degrees in physics and mathematics. Eight years later, he received his Ph.D. in physics with specialization in astrophysics from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. After a short stint working for the Magdalena Ridge 2.4m telescope team, he joined the Willamette University physics department as a visitor in 2015.

In 2019, Dr. Rembold's teaching load shifted to be split more evenly between the physics and computer science departments, reflecting not only responses to student demand and staffing, but also a recognition that the fields of astronomy and astrophysics were rapidly moving toward becoming a data science dominated practice. In 2022, Dr. Rembold moved entirely into the computer science and data science departments, where he focuses on introductory programming, database management and storage, and operating at the junction between the natural sciences and the computational sciences. When not teaching, Dr. Rembold stays active with volleyball, tennis, and enjoying the outdoors. He is the proud parent of an adorable cat, and enjoys unwinding by reading and playing various computer and board games.
