In his new role, Hoskins will focus some of his teaching, scholarship and service to build on Atkinson Graduate School of Management’s existing expertise in the concept that management can drive positive broader social benefits, in addition to just profit maximization. He was appointed on Jan. 2, 2022.

Expected areas of investment and development by AGSM may include corporate social responsibility; environmental, social and governance; stakeholder capitalism; moral capitalism and diversity, equity and inclusion.

Some of this work has been in progress at AGSM for years. For example, Professor of Operations and Supply Chain Management Andrew Kach teaches a popular elective on sustainability in supply chains, while Emeritus Professor of Marketing Elliot Maltz has long taught a well-received course on sustainability management. The concepts of business ethics and the consideration of a broader set of stakeholders in management decisions are also currently being discussed and incorporated across the core MBA curriculum.

“We have a community and a business environment that really supports the idea of mission and social impact,” Hoskins said. “You see that in everything from what students want to discuss in the classroom to the action of major organizations, including businesses in town. We want to contribute to the idea of ‘doing business for good.’”

As one part of this effort, Hoskins recently became a fellow for Caux Round Table, an international network of business leaders who work to support and advance the concept of moral capitalism. AGSM Dean Örn Bodvarsson has initiated and signed a formalized broader partnership with this organization, which is expected to yield additional forms of collaboration in coming years.

The Guy F. Atkinson professorship, most recently held by Maltz, is a three-year renewable appointment. Traditionally awarded strictly by merit, the choice for the professorship this year also considered alignment with the school’s strategic vision.

Bodvarsson said Hoskins has long held interest in the professorship focus areas, a primary one of which is corporate social responsibility. Hoskins will be thinking about how to build the model into new curriculum, events and other forms of service.

“Jake’s appointment is a great first step in Atkinson implementing pieces in the new strategic plan that speak to this whole area of ‘moral capitalism,’” Bodvarsson said.
