Scholarships for Overseas Studies

(Current Willamette students only)

There are two scholarships available for overseas studies. The amount of the scholarship varies depending on individual expenses and the number of scholarships awarded.

  • The Richard “Buzz” & Elizabeth Yocom Scholarship is available for any student who has financial need, as determined by the FAFSA. In addition, preference will be given to students who have already used all of the financial aid offered to them, including loans.
  • The Bernice Jackson Hoffman Scholarship is available only to students who are majoring in a foreign language. The Hoffman scholarship also requires financial need, as determined by the FAFSA. Preference will be given to students who have already used all of the financial aid offered to them, including loans.

If you are a foreign language major please apply only for the Hoffman Scholarship; you will only receive one scholarship.

Applications for these scholarships will be available at the Orientation Meeting the semester before you plan to study abroad.

Financial Aid for Non-Willamette Overseas Studies Programs

Students choosing to study abroad through a school other than Willamette University may continue to receive the following funds:

  • Pell Grants
  • Federal Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans
  • PLUS Loans

Students are only eligible to receive these funds if the college or university offering the program has been approved by the Department of Education as eligible to participate in federal student aid (Title IV) programs.

In addition, each applicant must complete the necessary paperwork with the Willamette Registrar's office before the financial aid can be approved.

To use your financial aid in a non-Willamette program, you must submit the Application for Financial Aid for Off Campus Study.
