In this course, students will acquire skills for engaging visual media in their social environments. Examine the important contributions of German cinema, from its pioneering beginnings to the present. Films will be considered in a broad cultural context where cinema is explored alongside other art forms. Consider the means by which these films tap into the desires, hopes, and fears of audiences and discuss the social role that they play.

Improve German language skills by exploring cultural, political, and everyday aspects of contemporary Germany. Themes and issues will include the role of Germany in the European Union, Ostalgie and German reunification, youth culture, literature, music, art, multiculturalism, cross-cultural comparisons, and the realities of the media world.
Program Requirements
Students pursuing a German minor will need to complete 20 semester hours in German courses:
- GERM 232 Intermediate German II (4)
- GERM 331W German Composition and Discussion (4)
- GERM 333 Contemporary German Culture (4)
- GERM 340 Introduction to German Literature (4)
- Four additional German semester hours at the 400 level (4)
