China's rich history and culture along with its emergence as such a prominent force in the world makes learning Mandarin an incredibly valuable and important experience for me. Emerging transnational problems including climate change and increasingly interconnected economic relations require transnational cooperation, and China's sphere of influence inside and outside of its own borders make it an incredibly important country to communicate and interact with. For me, studying Mandarin is a way of shifting towards a broader view of citizenship that focuses on being a member of a global community in a world increasingly centered on the East.
