Cayla Skillin-Brauchle: SUPER SPEED!

April 15 – May 14, 2017

Atrium Gallery

Drawing from field research in India, Skillin-Brauchle investigates the glossy appeal of speed and the reality of when things actually move slowly. In 2012, a Fulbright-Nehru grant enabled her to move to India to study the elaborately painted and ornately adorned Indian cargo trucks frequently observed on the highways there. Visiting truck yards, painting shops and decoration depots, she interviewed builders, painters, artisans, artists, truck drivers and owners to explore the driving force behind the vibrant decorations.

As Skillin-Brauchle describes her current exhibition, she says “SUPER SPEED!” is deeply inspired by the inventive, collaborative nature of Indian truck design that I witnessed again and again. This exhibition is also driven by a question that has lingered within me since 2013: what does it mean to design something to move quickly when in reality the road ahead is slow?”

“SUPER SPEED!” is divided into three components: framed drawings, a large mural size drawing, and three live performances. Together, these elements meditate on the notion, the depiction, and the reality of speed.

Skillin-Brauchle holds a BA degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin and an MFA degree from Ohio University in Athens and is currently an assistant professor of art at Willamette University.

I believe: that discussion is optimistic even and especially when it reveals larger societal problems; that engaging an audience’s creativity, compassion, and humor enriches contemporary art; that absurdity can be wholly honest and play is good.More information
