Strength and Dignity: Images of the Worker from the Permanent Collection

July 28 – October 21, 2018

Study Gallery and Print Study Center

Organized by curator Jonathan Bucci, the exhibition features a selection of American and European prints and photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries that depict scenes of workers and the working class. The artworks on view were generated at a time of enormous economic, political, and social upheaval – a period that included two world wars, the industrial revolution, worldwide economic collapse, and large scale immigration to the United States. Socialist and capitalist ideas were in much debate in the Western world during this time and concern for how these changes impacted the working classes was a subject of significant artistic output.

The artworks explore various industries including, farming, logging, fishing, metal industries, and street vendors and markets. Included in the exhibition are works by Jean Charlot, John Steuart Curry, Carl Hall, Darius Kinsey, Lewis Hine, John Sloan, Marion Post Wolcott, and Myra Wiggins, among others.

Drawn from the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s extensive works on paper collection, the exhibition has been organized as a companion exhibition to Witness: Themes of Social Justice in Contemporary Print- making and Photography from the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation opening September 15.

This exhibition has been made possible through the generous donations of artworks over the past 20 years, especially from the collections of Dan and Nancy Schneider, Bill Rhoades, and Gerald and Matsumi Robinson. It is supported by general operating support grants from the City of Salem’s Transient Occupancy Tax funds and the Oregon Arts Commission.
