The Faculty Resource Committee (FRC) reviews applications and makes recommendations to the Faculty Council for the Junior Faculty Research Leave Program, the Sabbatical Program, and the Faculty Study Time Program. The FRC also reviews applications and awards funds for Conference Travel Expenses, Atkinson Grants, and Research Expenses (now absorbed into the Atkinson Grant Program).
The Atkinson Faculty Development grants support and encourage active scholarship and research as well as continuing professional development, that require substantial time and expense during the summer or academic year. Awards are $2,500 every two years (max).
Eligibility, Guidelines and Evaluation Material
Criteria to be applied in the competitive evaluation of all proposals include the following: Clear statement of the purpose and rationale and the precise issue to be investigated or goal to be achieved; Well-planned approach to accomplishing the goal, including 1) statement of methodology, creative process, or other approach to the scholarship, 2) timetable, and 3) budget; Likelihood of publication, artistic exhibition, or presentation at a professional meeting (for research/scholarship awards); and Value of the project to the Willamette community and the profession.

This program is designed to facilitate outstanding scholarship by faculty members early in their career and to provide them with a semester without responsibility for teaching and service. Junior Faculty Research Leaves may involve but is not limited to critical writing, artistic performance, creative work, laboratory research, or imaginative writing. Faculty in their second and third year in the tenure process may apply for a leave to be held the following year. The duration of a research leave extends is one semester at full pay.
Eligibility, Guidelines and Evaluation Material
This is a highly competitive program designed for faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor who can demonstrate their potential for outstanding scholarship. In addition, an eligible faculty member must have established a solid record of effective teaching. Faculty in their second and third year in the tenure process may apply for a leave to be held the following year. A Junior Faculty Research Leave extends for one semester at full pay without responsibility for teaching and service.

This program provides individual faculty members with time to complete a major, long-term scholarly or creative project intended for peer review in the form of publication, public performance, or exhibition. Full-time, tenure track faculty with two or more years of full-time teaching may apply. Successful applicants will have their normal teaching load reduced by two-thirds time for one semester.

This program supports faculty travel to academic conferences up to $1400 for continental travel, $1800 for international travel. (Please note: There are new faculty travel policies in effect from June 2009 - May 2011.)

Sabbatical leaves are granted to encourage professional growth and intellectual enrichment,particularly as these qualities contribute to teaching effectiveness. Sabbatical activities may involve but are not limited to, artistic performance, creative work, critical writing, development of new approaches to teaching, or laboratory research.
