Issue 33 - August 2016
With hundreds of first-year students set to arrive on campus next week, we're reminded of when and where our own college and adult lives officially began. For most of us, the experience of being wide-eyed freshmen conjures fond memories—special moments and feelings that are worth, and deserve to be, relived.
And with Alumni Weekend 2016 now just five weeks away, alumni from all WU schools will have the chance to relive those memories and experiences soon. We hope you can return to campus this year to reunite with friends, revisit your favorite places and reconnect with Willamette.

At Alumni Weekend 2016, you'll have plenty of chances to let loose, visit with friends and see how campus has changed since your time at college. But it's also a time to share the achievements of our fellow Bearcats and celebrate the Willamette community as a whole.
Here are a few key events you won't want to miss:
- Bearcat Athletics Hall of Fame - Join Willamette athletic legends for a special celebratory dinner and ceremony recognizing the outstanding contributions to the rich tradition of Bearcat Athletics. If you are interested in attending or have questions, contact athletics@willamette.edu.
- Alumni Awards Ceremony & Dinner - Enjoy a lovely dinner amongst recipients of the 2016 Alumni Awards and hear what some of the best of us are doing in their local communities.
- Outdoor Program 10-Year Celebration Dinner - Join past and present participants of Willamette's Outdoor Program for a traditional camp out in celebration of the program's 10-year anniversary at WU.
- Bistro Reunion Brunch - Former Bistro employees and managers are invited to return to their old workplace for a cup of coffee and some Buzz Bars, but more importantly, to commemorate the WU hotspot's 30th year on campus.

Do you know of an outstanding alumna/us who is doing great things? Nominate a Bearcat for the 2017 Alumni Awards in three categories. The deadline for the 2017 awards cycle is Oct. 16, 2016.
Don't forget, you can meet the 2016 Alumni Awards recipients at Alumni Weekend this fall!
The deadline to sign up for our extraordinary adventure to Tanzania is Wednesday, Aug. 31! And with the trip filling up quickly, space—along with time—is running out! Contact Kim Burris at kburris@willamette.edu if you are interested in this trip, which will feature a service project at The Mungere School followed by a safari adventure. There is also the option of adding on a climb up mighty Mt. Kilimanjaro!

Olympic runner Nick Symmonds ’06 and his caffeine-infused sports product Run Gum were featured in a Wall Street Journal article
Lukas Volger ’04, co-founder of award-winning food magazine Jarry, was featured in a Boston Globe article
Craig Jackson ’97 was named athletic director at Umpqua Community College
Music educator and violinist Cheryl Scheidemantle ’84 was named chair of the Los Angeles Children's Chorus Board of Directors
Bob Rieder ’64 retired from his position as chief university counsel at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, after serving in that position for 40 years
Shirley Plummer ’52 had one of her haiku poems published on the blog NeverEnding Story
