Pro Bono Honors Program

A Practical Skills Learning Opportunity

Willamette's Pro Bono Honors Program enables students to enhance their learning experience by participating in community-based legal service projects. Students gain valuable hands-on involvement in the community by volunteering with a public service organization. This includes government agencies, public interest and other non-profit organizations. Students have volunteered at legal aid offices providing direct legal services to indigent individuals; at non-profit advocacy groups, such as domestic violence shelters, using their research and writing skills to help form policies and advocacy goals; at local courts to mediate small claims disputes where the parties are not able to afford a lawyer.

Honors Recognition

All students are eligible to participate and it’s easy to qualify for an award. First year law students receive Honors recognition after completing 10 hours of pro bono work as a legal or general volunteer during Winter or Spring Break. This may be volunteering for legal aid or Habitat for Humanity. Second and third year students must complete 30 hours of legal volunteer work to be recognized. The students who have the most hours for their class receive special recognition.

One third year student is awarded The Rupert E. “Rudy” Park, Jr. Pro Bono Student of the Year Award for contributing the most hours of pro bono service throughout his or her law school career and who has participated in the Pro Bono Program in at least the second and third year of law school.

Participating in the Pro Bono Honors program is another way to add practical experience to your resume.
