Phil HanniPhilip Hanni married his passions for social justice, pacifism and equal rights to his dual careers of the ministry and education through his work in the campus ministry. He was fortunate enough to have the best of both worlds. He died in Salem on March 21, 2013 at age 80.

Phil was Chaplain at Willamette University from 1973 until 1985. He also served as an assistant professor and Director of Church-University Relations at Willamette, as well as the Chairman of the Atkinson Speaker Committee. After leaving Willamette he served churches in Milton-Freewater and Weston, OR; Caldwell, ID; and Lebanon, OR until his retirement in 1997.

Phil and Erin Hanni joined ICL in 1997. Phil was Curriculum Director from 2000 until 2005. Phil and Erin contributed to ICL and the University in many important and memorable ways.

Here is a video tribute to Phil and Erin Hanni created by classmate Don Gallagher.

In 2013 the Institute for Continued Learning decided to honor Phil’s many contributions to both the University and ICL by establishing the Hanni Student Scholar Program (originally the "Phil Hanni Student Scholar Program"). This program was established to honor those outstanding students at Willamette who were so much in Phil’s thoughts throughout his career.

To this end ICL takes great pleasure in presenting this award each year to the six top student scholars who have applied for the award as judged by a panel of Willamette faculty and ICL members.

We are pleased to invite Phil’s wife, Erin Hanni, to present this award to each of the selected Student Scholars.
