The Welcome Back Coffee is rescheduled for Tuesday, January 23rd.
10:00 am-12:00 pm
CANCELED due to weather-related conditions!"Ballet for Everyone," Mike Weddle, Leigh Goldberger [Brenda Kidder], To be rescheduled...
weddle  goldberger The presentation will start with the history of ballet from Catherine de' Medici to Louis XIV to the present. How did it develop? How has it changed? What should you look for when you go to a ballet (and I hope you all will)? Who were the major ballet figures in our lifetime? Which companies are the best in the world right now? Have you seen Oregon Ballet Theatre recently?

I will be joined by Leigh Goldberger, company dancer at Oregon Ballet Theatre, for a presentation that will be part lecture (a small part), part demonstration by Leigh, and various video clips taken from the unlimited resources of the Internet - you will see ballets ranging from Swan Lake to Manon to West Side Story - all with incredible music.

Leigh and I will be happy to answer any questions you have at the end of the first hour and again at the end of the second.

Leigh Goldberger is from West Palm Beach, Florida, where she trained with Deborah Marquez of the School of Ballet Arts while attending A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. As a student, she was fortunate to have worked with many artistic directors and guest choreographers in all styles of dance, and has had the honor of performing roles in many classical ballets including George Balanchine’s Serenade and Valse Fantaisie, and pieces set by Lloyd Culbreath of the Fosse Trust. She has attended summer programs with Houston Ballet Academy, Milwaukee Ballet School, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and CuBallet with Laura Alonzo. In 2018, she joined Nashville Ballet’s training program for two seasons before joining OBT2 for the 2020-21 season. She was promoted to company apprentice in the 2021-22 season and to a Company Artist for the 2022-23 season.

Mike Weddle was raised in Berkeley, California. He started studying dance at age 18, first at UCLA and then in San Francisco, New York and London. He worked with many modern and classical choreographers, among them José Limón, Murray Lewis and Kenneth MacMillan. After an injury ended his dance career he started teaching in Salem, Oregon. He taught special education, computer science and conservation biology. In 2000 he helped establish the Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School, a public charter school focusing on environmental science. He retired in 2007 but continues to volunteer at his former school. He and his wife Karen have been supporters of OBT since its creation. He began serving on the OBT Board of Trustees in 2016.

"The Unimaginable Journey of Peter Ertel," Joseph Cahn [Brenda Kidder], Kaneko Auditorium
cahnIn the midst of great evil it is the courageous man or woman who refuses to succumb, and Peter Ertel was one such man. Forced to serve in the German army despite his open contempt for the Nazis and his refusal to kill the enemy, Ertel would not only miraculously survive World War II but would also be regarded as family by his Jewish employers. THE UNIMAGINABLE JOURNEY OF PETER ERTEL is a riveting, award-winning account of the life of a man who defied insurmountable odds in an unforgiving environment and who later found peace in America. This film combines archive footage – much of which has never before been shown – with Ertel’s own brave telling of his extraordinary odyssey. A true story so bold, brave, and beautiful it will restore your faith that humanity can survive even the darkest of days. Winner of the "David Ponce Best of the Fest Award" at the 2017 Chagrin Documentary Film Festival, the "Founders' Choice Award" at the 2016 G.I. Film Festival, and the "Local Heroes Competition" at the 2017 Cleveland International Film Festival.

Joseph Cahn has been producing, writing, and editing broadcast and non-broadcast film and video productions for nearly 30 years. Before starting Victory Films in 2004, he was a producer-editor for several Cleveland-area multimedia firms. Prior to that, he was a producer with NFL Films where he wrote and edited highlight films and segments for HBO, ESPN, and home video.

The risk of falling in older adults is usually related to combination of factors, including: Balance and/or walking problems, the use of multiple medications, home hazards, positional low blood pressure and feet/footwear issues which will be covered in this presentation.

Erin is a Certified Personal Trainer and has worked with Fitness Evolved for seven years. She is also part of the Health Education Team at the Salem Health Community Health Education Center (CHEC) which provides education on various health topics to our Community.

howard Learn about the Community Health Education Center at Salem, and find out how medical librarian Paul Howard and the CHEC library’s hand-picked collection of books, videos, and electronic resources can connect you with the health information you need.  Discover how search engines like Google and Bing and AI platforms like ChatGPT and Bard are just not up to the task, at least not yet.  We’ll also explore how you can determine whether a given web site might be biased or untrustworthy.

Paul W. Howard, PhD, MLIS, is Health System Librarian at Salem Health, where he has worked since 2004.  He is married to physician Antje Howard, has two adult sons, and loves hiking and fishing in the great outdoors.  He also could still probably thrash Dave MacMillan at ping pong if given the chance and if the ping pong gods were happy with him on that particular day.

"Great Decisions, Video Lecture: Mideast Realignment," Anita Owen [Anita Owen/Mark Kendall], Kaneko Auditorium
owens  kendall The United States and Middle East are at a crossroads. In spite of a reduced presence in the Middle East, the U.S. still has significant national interests there and the area is a key arena for global power politics. Can the U.S. continue to defend its interests in the Middle East and globally with a lower level of military and political involvement, or should it recommit to a leading role in the region?

Anita Owen joined ICL in September 2022.
Mark Kendall joined ICL in September 2023.
