The presentation will start with the history of ballet from Catherine de' Medici to Louis XIV to the present. How did it develop? How has it changed? What should you look for when you go to a ballet (and I hope you all will)? Who were the major ballet figures in our lifetime? Which companies are the best in the world right now? Have you seen Oregon Ballet Theatre recently?I will be joined by Leigh Goldberger, company dancer at Oregon Ballet Theatre, for a presentation that will be part lecture (a small part), part demonstration by Leigh, and various video clips taken from the unlimited resources of the Internet - you will see ballets ranging from Swan Lake to Manon to West Side Story - all with incredible music. Leigh and I will be happy to answer any questions you have at the end of the first hour and again at the end of the second. Leigh Goldberger is from West Palm Beach, Florida, where she trained with Deborah Marquez of the School of Ballet Arts while attending A.W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts. As a student, she was fortunate to have worked with many artistic directors and guest choreographers in all styles of dance, and has had the honor of performing roles in many classical ballets including George Balanchine’s Serenade and Valse Fantaisie, and pieces set by Lloyd Culbreath of the Fosse Trust. She has attended summer programs with Houston Ballet Academy, Milwaukee Ballet School, Alonzo King LINES Ballet, and CuBallet with Laura Alonzo. In 2018, she joined Nashville Ballet’s training program for two seasons before joining OBT2 for the 2020-21 season. She was promoted to company apprentice in the 2021-22 season and to a Company Artist for the 2022-23 season. Mike Weddle was raised in Berkeley, California. He started studying dance at age 18, first at UCLA and then in San Francisco, New York and London. He worked with many modern and classical choreographers, among them José Limón, Murray Lewis and Kenneth MacMillan. After an injury ended his dance career he started teaching in Salem, Oregon. He taught special education, computer science and conservation biology. In 2000 he helped establish the Jane Goodall Environmental Middle School, a public charter school focusing on environmental science. He retired in 2007 but continues to volunteer at his former school. He and his wife Karen have been supporters of OBT since its creation. He began serving on the OBT Board of Trustees in 2016. |

I plan on giving many examples of vertebrates not following the typical male/female pattern for reproduction. Some examples are: species composed of only females, lone females laying fertile eggs, species that have multiple morphs of males and females, females the breed outside their species, species that have individuals that change their sex, males that take on many of the task associated with females, and various mutations that cause the genetics not to match the anatomy.Wayne Wallace has been a member of ICL since 2015. |

Falls can have very serious consequences as we age. Each year, more than 25 percent of adults 65 or older have a fall, and 3 million are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The risk of falling in older adults is usually related to combination of factors, including: Balance and/or walking problems, the use of multiple medications, home hazards, positional low blood pressure and feet/footwear issues which will be covered in this presentation. Erin is a Certified Personal Trainer and has worked with Fitness Evolved for seven years. She is also part of the Health Education Team at the Salem Health Community Health Education Center (CHEC) which provides education on various health topics to our Community. |

Captain Engstrom will explain how this exclusive program operates with only 1 percent of Law Enforcement leaders nationally being selected to attend, what is taught, and what he learned from this experience. Before becoming the Silverton Police Captain, Todd Engstrom worked for 27 years as a police officer with the Portland Police. During that time, he held several positions including Advanced Academy Coordinator, Liquor License Investigator, Bike Officer and Trainer, Background Investigator, Lead Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Mounted Patrol Officer. He received a BA in Criminal Justice & Corrections from Indiana University Bloomington and an MPS in Public Safety from the University of Virginia. |
