Iris Hankins

When Iris Hankins BA’24 entered Willamette as a junior transfer student, she already had global aspirations. An International Studies major, Iris had a strong interest in studying democratic institutions and global public affairs. At Willamette, she was able to pursue her interests while traveling the world.

Iris spent part of her first summer after arriving at Willamette pursuing a prestigious research fellowship in Public Policy & International Affairs at the University of Washington. She was able to conduct rigorous policy research while learning about careers in public service.

For Iris, the highlight of her college experience was her semester as part of the inaugural session of Willamette’s study abroad program at the University of Strasbourg. Studying at the border between France and Germany, Iris dove deep into studying Democratic Institutions and Citizenship while fulfilling her dream of travel.

Back in Salem, she also put her interest to work in her own research. Her senior thesis, “Understanding Rwanda's Success: A Study of Gender Equity in Parliament,” explored how nations try to achieve gender representation in government. She hopes that these research experiences will help prepare her for her future work in public service.

“Iris is a self-motivated and creative student who has charted her own educational journey,” said Associate Professor of Asian and International Studies Greg Felker. “She has moved across different institutions and locations while engaging fully in learning, speaking, friendship, and service opportunities along the way.”

As she leaves Willamette, Iris hopes to further explore the globe. She’ll be looking for ways to travel abroad and work internationally. With the skills and experiences she has gained at Willamette, she’ll likely have a smooth road ahead.
