Undergraduate Research

At Willamette, undergraduate research means much more than writing an assigned paper for class.

Our students engage in meaningful, hands-on research that often leads to published results in journals, national fellowships or public presentations — opportunities many other students don’t have until graduate school.

We offer more than 75 competitive undergraduate research grants annually in all subject areas, from the arts to the natural sciences to the humanities. In addition, our professors often invite students to collaborate on scholarly projects — thus helping them develop valuable critical thinking, writing and analytical skills.

Research Opportunities

Whether they are unraveling scientific mysteries, studying cultures around the globe or creating new artistic endeavors, Willamette undergraduates benefit from numerous opportunities to pursue artistic, scholarly and professional research.

  • College Colloquium Student Research Grants

Grants of up to $3,500 are available to first-year students interested in researching a topic related to their College Colloquium program, a first-semester course that immerses incoming students in the liberal arts environment.

  • President Scholarship

One or two juniors each year from any discipline receive this scholarship for one full semester's tuition for their senior year or a $5,000 graduate fellowship. It also includes $2,500 for research expenses the summer preceding their senior year.

  • iHuman Sciences Initiative

Students collaborate with faculty on research that ties exercise science or psychology to other disciplines. Research is conducted during the summer or the academic year. Students and faculty present their research on campus and at regional or national conferences.
