How to Apply for Financial Aid

Learn how to apply for financial aid at Willamette and how to get help along the way.

When you apply to Willamette, you are automatically considered for merit scholarships based on academic achievement. If you are accepted to Willamette, you will receive notification of your merit scholarship eligibility along with your offer for admission or shortly thereafter.

The FAFSA—or Free Application for Federal Student Aid—determines your eligibility for federal and state aid, as well as for Willamette University funding.

Our school code is: 003227.

First-time students will usually receive a Financial Aid Award Letter around February. This letter—your financial aid package—outlines any FAFSA-based award eligibility, such as grants, scholarships and loans, as well need- and merit-based awards from Willamette.

The award letter also outlines your estimated expenses and lists the amount you will be billed after any aid is accepted.

After you’ve received your award letter, you can accept or decline what you’ve been offered online. At this time, you may also request a re-evaluation of your aid eligibility by completing an appeal form.

Depending on your financial aid award and your family’s needs, you may also wish to apply for a student loan. There are several options available, including Federal Direct and Parent PLUS loans.

The financial aid office will let you know, by email, about any remaining forms or steps needed to process and complete your individual financial aid package.

In addition to being automatically considered for merit scholarships, you can also apply for competitive scholarships that align with your talent and interests. They are available in areas such as debate, music, studio art, theatre and STEM (some may require an audition).
