Same Program, Two Learning Experiences

Willamette offers a master's degree in data science in both Portland and Salem. While both programs share faculty, career development resources, and curriculum, there are a few distinct differences in how students experience the program. Most students take the majority of their courses in one location, though cross-campus enrollment is available. The Salem program offers:

  • Class schedule format:  Daytime courses that meet twice per week for approximately 1.5 hours, creating a consistent and structured weekly rhythm
  • Cohort composition:  A collaborative learning environment that often includes students from Willamette’s 3+1 MSDS pathway, MBA/MSDS joint-degree students, and other graduate students.
  • Campus experience: Courses are held on Willamette’s main campus, where students learn in a residential university environment surrounded by undergraduate and graduate students, campus events, and shared academic spaces

Why Study Data Science in Salem?

In Salem, learning happens through a steady, structured, daytime graduate experience. Classes meet twice per week, allowing you to stay engaged with the course material and collaborate regularly with your cohort.

Throughout the program, you’ll gain hands-on experience through applied coursework and a capstone project, working in small teams to solve real-world data challenges. Across the curriculum, courses emphasize practical application, helping you build a portfolio to share with future employers. Our MSDS program equips students with the data analytics skills needed to solve real-world problems and meet the demands of today’s data-driven organizations.

Our Salem Learning Environment

In Salem, data science students experience more distributed learning across the week. Rather than meeting in longer evening sessions, students attend shorter daytime classes twice a week, creating regular opportunities to engage with faculty, collaborate with classmates, and stay consistently connected to coursework throughout the semester. Students will also complete a capstone project, working with small groups to complete a data science project that stands out to future employers. Our courses focus on hands-on experiences, equipping students for data science roles after they graduate.

The Salem cohort often includes students from Willamette’s 3+1 and joint degree pathways, along with other graduate students pursuing data careers. Students will learn alongside peers who bring diverse professional and academic backgrounds, shaping discussions and collaborations.
