Abby Nachand

This healthcare leadership course helped me refine and learn new skills to apply in my career. It provided a comprehensive foundation across legal, ethics, IT, leadership, and communications — all critical areas for today’s healthcare leaders. The content was practical and engaging. It helped me understand not only the regulatory and ethical responsibilities we face, but also how to lead with clarity, integrity, and adaptability in a rapidly changing environment. I left the course with new tools to improve decision-making, strengthen team communication, and approach complex challenges with confidence. And more importantly, the comradery with your classmates is amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone committed to growing as a healthcare leader.

The Willamette University Healthcare Leadership Certificate Program was an incredible crash course in high level healthcare management and leadership skills. I would highly recommend this program to anyone that is unsure whether they want to commit to a full MBA/MHA program but still wants to advance their understanding of healthcare management and improve their leadership skills.

The program curriculum covered a broad spectrum of healthcare management functions, including: the evolution of the healthcare ecosystem; the importance of a mission centered focus; how to utilize technology to improve staff experience and patient care outcomes; relevant healthcare laws and things to watch out for; and even daily operations and employee management skills that can be applied to small outpatient clinics (as in my case) and larger hospital systems. Each professor brought incredible expertise and real-life examples from their practices. They encouraged us to share our own experiences and perspectives for further examination, promoting many lively discussions (and lots of laughs). The small class size and collaborative environment fostered connections across peers and the greater healthcare community.

From this certificate program, I gained strategies for implementing change effectively (that won't send my team into a tailspin), how to coach my team in ways that promotes autonomy and a solution focused mindset, how to dial in our operations to run more efficiently, and how to move toward a more value-based care model. Finding a business course that is this comprehensive and specific to the healthcare industry is such a unique find! So honored to have been in the first cohort of this program!

For years, I stood where many of you might be standing now: at the base of a mountain, looking up at the summit of executive leadership. I had deep experience in my field, a passion for the work, and a clear vision for the path ahead. Yet, I found myself seeking the right map and the proper gear to be perceived by senior leadership as ready to make the ascent from managing a team to leading an organization.

The Healthcare Leadership Certificate was and is the trailhead for that climb.

This is not a program of disconnected lectures. It is a masterfully designed journey where each session is a new foothold, building upon the last. The professors, all seasoned leaders who have navigated this terrain themselves, weave together practical knowledge and high-level theory. They guide you from a solid understanding of the landscape of our health systems today to how you can anticipate future challenges, build coalitions, and lead with a holistic view of the regulatory, financial, and operational necessities of modern healthcare.

Before this program, I struggled to coalesce my ideas on complex issues like data governance into a compelling pitch for support. It was like trying to climb without the right equipment. After the program I found I’d gained a new sense of confidence and empowerment. I learned how to bring more voices into my work, not just as a collaborator, but as a convener. Someone who is seen confidently securing the lines for a successful team to ascend and enjoy new views together.

So, if you are simply considering becoming a healthcare leader, my advice for you is to read books, network often, and talk with hope to other leaders. You’ll be well-read and become an anecdotal mention amongst your colleagues, and will likely find a lot of lateral opportunities that might become easily sloped hills or interesting trails that can be enjoyed leisurely and without much challenge.

However, if you are truly committed to becoming a healthcare leader then this program can help. For me, this program helped me overcome the trailhead which led to a career summit I wanted to reach but wondered if I could. It offered me the proper gear, expert skills, and challenge to reach the summit. Most importantly, Willamette University’s  Healthcare Leadership Certificate   helped provide me the solid foundations I needed to not only make the climb but to excel once  I planted my flag.

Sincerely,
Patch Adam Perryman, MHA, PMP, Graduate of Willamette University’s Inaugural Cohort for this Program
