The U.S. has a high rate of recidivism for those who get out of prison. Nearly two-thirds of those who re-enter society will return to jail or prison within three years. The literature is clear that prisoners face numerous formal barriers to re-entry including legalized discrimination in housing and employment, as well as social stigma and a lack of access to public safety net programs. Our research group seeks to understand the process of re-entry with a qualitative, pilot study. We plan to conduct 20 in-depth interviews with formerly incarcerated men in the summer of 2019 to better understand the process of adjustment that occurs when men leave prison. Students are asked to contribute interview questions that would give them data to complete their own project. What do you want to know about/from men who have been released from prison in the last 2 years? Students will help with transcribing and coding interview data. Conducting interviews is optional.
