ICL Lunch Bunch

The efforts to organize an on-campus ICL/Willamette Toastmasters Club have not been successful. Feedback from our own members indicates that after initial informational meetings, the expectations of the organization exceeded most members' comfort level. Efforts to recruit interested Willamette students and staff by Marjorie Dudley, Willamette representative, also had limited success. We could not meet the charter requirements of 20 participants.

The ICL Board still thinks the idea of communication skill building has merit. So it's back to the drawing board. We've decided for spring semester to offer a different, more informal alternative, the "ICL Lunch Bunch." It will be an informal, nonthreatening, supportive group for the purpose of developing communication skills, for ICL members only. Meetings will be held during lunch every Tuesday we have class, or twice a month, as determined by the members. The emphasis will be on a shared instructional approach with lots of FUN and good times together.

The first session will focus a bit on that old demon, "Stage Fright." We hope a few participants will want to share their own war stories with butterflies, shortness of breath, and weak knees. There will be an opportunity for some short impromptu speeches followed by a critique by a designated evaluator, who will share two or three strengths demonstrated by the speaker, followed by one suggestion for improvement. We will also take time to brainstorm what direction the group might take to help the members with their specific communication issues. There are ICL members already highly skilled as public speakers who will, we hope, join the group and be models for the rest of us. Additional content will be drawn from Mastering Public Speaking: The Handbook (George L. Grice).

The lunch bunch meets every Tuesday 12:30 - 1:30 in the Montag Conference Room.

Since seating is limited in the scheduled room it would be helpful if you would email your intent to join the ICL Lunch Bunch to:

If numbers warrant it, a different meeting space will be requested.
