Law Scholarships

At Willamette University School of Law, we are committed to making a legal education accessible and affordable. Thanks to our strong fiscal stability and strategic partnerships, we offer a variety of scholarships to support our students in their academic pursuits.

Merit-Based Scholarships

Willamette Law awards scholarships to a significant portion of our incoming class. These scholarships are based on a comprehensive evaluation by the Admissions Committee, which considers several factors, including academic achievements, leadership potential, and contributions to the diversity and quality of the entering class. Scholarships are awarded regardless of nationality or citizenship.

  • Renewability

Scholarship awards are renewable for the second and third years of law school, provided that recipients remain in good standing according to the School’s academic regulations and honor code, as outlined in the student handbook.

  • JD/MBA Joint Degree Program

Students enrolled in the JD/MBA Joint Degree Program should be aware that scholarships are awarded separately by the School of Law and the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. Scholarships from one school apply only while a student is studying at that school.

Direct Admission Scholarships

Scholarships awarded through our Direct Admission programs are straightforward and durable, providing transparency and assurance to students about the financial support they will receive throughout their studies.

External Scholarships

In addition to Willamette's institutional scholarships, we encourage students to explore a wide range of external scholarships. One particularly notable opportunity is the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program, a partnership between Willamette Law and the Peace Corps.

The Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program provides graduate school scholarships to returned Peace Corps volunteers who complete a degree-related internship in an underserved American community while pursuing their studies. This program is available to students seeking a Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Laws (LLM) in Dispute Resolution or Transnational Law, or Master of Legal Studies (MLS).

Scholarship Details

Each Coverdell Fellow admitted to Willamette Law as a full-time or part-time student will receive a scholarship per year. In addition, all Coverdell Fellows are eligible for further merit-based scholarships.

Internship Requirement

Internships in underserved communities are a vital component of the Coverdell Fellows Program. Through these internships, returned Peace Corps volunteers can apply their global experiences to local challenges, supporting the Peace Corps’ Third Goal of enhancing Americans’ understanding of the world. These professional placements also provide valuable opportunities for students to develop their legal skills in real-world settings.

About the Paul D. Coverdell Fellows Program

The Coverdell Fellows Program, originally known as Fellows/USA, was established in 1985 at Teachers College, Columbia University. Today, it includes over 80 university partners across 31 states and the District of Columbia. The program offers financial assistance to returned Peace Corps volunteers, who are eligible for the fellowship at any time following their service. This lifetime eligibility means that Coverdell Fellows come from diverse professional backgrounds and represent a wide range of ages and experiences.

  1. Submit a statement indicating your interest in the Coverdell Fellowship with your law school application.
