Construction projects underway

by Marketing & Communications,

From the renovation of a residence hall to the remodel of laboratory spaces, several construction projects are ensuing across campus this summer.

The resulting noise may cause temporary disruptions to employees. For this reason — and to ensure people’s safety — updates on the projects will appear in each issue of the Bearcat Bulletin until the work is complete.

Questions about the renovation projects may be addressed to Jill Munger, director of Campus Services Support, at Ext. 5381.

The projects:

Baxter Residence Hall

What’s Happening: Throughout the summer, FXG, a Salem-based construction firm, will upgrade all the restrooms on the second and third floors. It’s also reconfiguring space and adding single-occupancy rooms in the 67-year-old building.

Safety: Construction fencing is being erected around the building. The fencing will extend southwest and southeast to the Beta Stub storage area near Ford Hall and portions of Westwood and Northwood halls.

Access: The Bishop Wellness Center, Montag Den and Montag Center remain open.

Noise: During demolition, noise will be heard throughout the Baxter complex and Montag Center.

Collins Science Center

What’s Happening: Construction is taking place on the first, third and fourth floors of the building through early August. During this time, FXG workers will relocate the human anatomy lab to Room 408 and transform the first floor into research laboratory space for the Physics Department. Crews will renovate rooms 318 and 320, which will replace the chemistry classrooms on the first floor (rooms 102 and 105). Teaching labs will also be added to rooms 321, 322 and 325, and professor David Craig’s research space will be moved to Room 326.

Access: The first floor is off limits, due to the scope of work taking place. The second floor remains open, and there’s limited access to the third and fourth floors.

Noise: Construction noise will be heard throughout the building during the demolition phase.

Other Projects

Sparks Athletic Center: Crews are installing additional fire sprinklers in areas not addressed by the building’s recent renovation, and they’re adding an ADA entry to the south side of the building by Cone Field House. They’re also retrofitting the lighting in Cone Field House to increase energy efficiency.

Hatfield Library: New carpet is being installed on the second floor.

Putnam University Center: Crews are installing new entry doors on the north and south sides of the building.

Classroom Upgrades: Upgrades are planned for select academic classrooms in Smullin, Walton and Eaton halls, the College of Law and the Atkinson Graduate School of Management (Seeley G. Mudd building).
