Stained glass shines light on Willamette’s history

In radiant hues of amber, red, green and blue, 16 stained glass windows in Cone Chapel commemorate some of Willamette’s treasured community members.

The vitreous works of art decorate every wall of the chapel and extend almost from floor to ceiling. Commissioned out of love, admiration and appreciation, they represent an enduring testament to wives and mothers, students, teachers, trustees, and one interim university president (James H. Corson, 1972-73).

Within the larger panels, smaller scenes provide inspirational and moving vignettes, including Willamette’s motto, Pacific Northwest landscapes, a symbolic dove of peace, the Oregon state seal and the American flag.

Enjoy these colorful close-ups of some of Cone Chapel’s stained glass windows.
