The CLM provides Spanish language courses to students from around the world taught by experienced professors in a beautiful and traditional facility. Each semester begins with a comprehensive orientation program followed by a month long intensive Spanish language course (Intensivo). After the Intensivo students will choose from a variety of topics courses depending on language ability. A professor from one of the ILACA schools will teach a course during the spring semester. Internship and service learning course options are available among the CLM offerings.
The fall semester begins in early September and concludes mid-December. The intensive month of Spanish language ends at the beginning of October and students then choose from the Topics Courses listed below. Advanced level students enroll in two mandatory courses and choose two Topics Courses (students can choose up to three topics courses, but two is typical). Upper-Intermediate level students enroll in three mandatory courses and choose one Topics Course (students can choose up to two Topics Courses, but one is typical).
Intensivo: September Intensive Course
The Intensivo course is designed to help students transition into total Spanish language immersion and prepare for the Topics Courses by practicing speaking, listening, writing and reading skills four hours a day for one month. Some of these course hours concentrate on preparation for the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE). See the Academics section on the Program Overview site for more information.
Development of Spanish Cultures: A Pluralistic Approach (formally Spanish Culture and Civilization)
(Mandatory) This course designed specifically for the fall semester is taught by the resident site director. The goals of the course are to explain the general characteristics of the history, art and culture of three thousand years of civilization in the Iberian Peninsula: from prehistory until contemporary Spain. The course will introduce the principle characteristics of the geography, topography and climate of the Iberian Peninsula as well as the major political, cultural and social events which have contributed to today's Spain. This course will meet for 45 contact hours.
Topics Courses
A placement exam determines your level for Language and Topics Courses. All of the fall CLM courses meet four hours per week.
Advanced level students (Estudios Hispánicos) - Fall
In addition to the mandatory Development of Spanish Cultures and Speaking and Writing Skills courses, choose two or three courses. Underlined courses are recommended by previous students and the Program Director - choose these courses when possible. All courses are 45 contact hours unless otherwise noted. Hispanic Literary Studies
A professor from one of the ILACA institutions will teach this specially designed course which focuses on major genres of Hispanic literature through close analysis of selected masterpieces. This course will push students to develop critical reading skills and written analysis in Spanish.
