Willamette has been part of Russ Beaton’s life since he arrived from Hood River Valley in 1956. After completing a Ph.D. in economics at Claremont Graduate School, he taught in California and Vancouver, B.C., before returning to Salem. He spent 33 years in the economics department at Willamette and served on the original planning committee for the Atkinson Graduate School of Management.

During more than three decades, Beaton taught 22 different courses, including several he originated. He team-taught in interdisciplinary courses with 14 different faculty members. When Willamette created the position of faculty mentor, he was elected by his faculty peers to serve as the first mentor.

Beaton has co-authored three books about sustainable development and is completing a fourth, with his brother Dave ‘63, to be titled “Localism: The Economics of Peace.”

Join Beaton back in the classroom during Alumni Reunion Weekend 2018 for “A Statistical and Personal Look at Inequality” on Saturday, June 9, 2018.
