Chinese Studies

Minor

Gain a deep understanding of Chinese language and culture and learn how to navigate an interconnected world.

Now more than ever, businesses and organizations need highly skilled navigators of Chinese language and culture. Our Chinese Studies program will give you the in-depth knowledge you need to thrive in an increasingly complex and diverse world.

In addition to traditional literature and language courses, you’ll take a vast range of classes in folklore, religion, media studies, art history, film, international politics and economics. You’ll also learn in small, dynamic settings alongside native Chinese speakers.

Outside the classroom, you can apply your knowledge in a variety of settings. Teach Chinese to Salem-area youths. Take part in Chinese garden trips, cultural lectures and other activities. Collaborate on funded research. And choose from an array of study abroad opportunities, including Lingnan University in Hong Kong and Xiamen University.

Many of our graduates teach and work in China or go on to pursue globally focused careers with businesses, NGOs or public service organizations. Whatever path you choose, you’ll build bridges of understanding and help people find common ground.
