Insurance Plans

Willamette offers insurance plans to help fit the individual needs of its employees. Life insurance and Disability benefits are an inexpensive way to help you protect your assets and provide for your loved ones. Each plan provides different coverage level options and many of the plans provide benefits in addition to death benefits. Employees may enroll in one or more of the offered life insurance plans if they are eligible.

Willamette University provides basic Group Term Life Insurance through Guardian for all eligible employees up to two (2) times the employee’s annual salary, to a maximum of $1,000,000 (amounts over $600,000 are subject to Evidence of Insurability). The University pays the entire cost of this coverage and is automatic for all eligible employees who work a minimum of 30 hours per week, or are otherwise .75 FTE employees. Coverage begins the first day of the month after their start date.

Willamette University provides Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage for all eligible employees equal to one (1) times the employee’s elected life benefits. These benefits are paid in the event of accidental death or dismemberment. The University pays the entire cost of this coverage and is automatic for all eligible employees who work a minimum of 30 hours per week, or are otherwise .75 FTE employees. Coverage begins the first day of the month after their start date.

Eligible employees may purchase additional Voluntary Life Insurance of up to five (5) times the employee’s annual salary, with a maximum of $600,000. Voluntary Life Insurance also allows for coverage of an employee’s spouse/domestic partner and eligible dependent children. Spousal coverage is to a maximum of $250,000; dependent child coverage is to a maximum of $10,000.

For new employees, there is a guarantee issue of coverage up to $300,000 per employee, $20,000 for a spouse, and $10,000 for dependent children (amounts over guarantee issue are subject to Evidence of Insurability). Voluntary Life Insurance coverage comes with included Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage for employee, spouse/domestic partner, and eligible children up to one (1) times the elected life benefits. Benefits are paid based on the terms and conditions of the Summary Plan Description (SPD).

Willamette University provides Long-Term Disability (LTD) insurance through Guardian. The group Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance is designed to replace a substantial part of lost income in the event of total disability.

Benefits begin after 90 days of disability or the exhaustion of sick leave. The plan pays 60% of the employee's salary up to $6,000 per month. Benefits will be reduced by payments received under Workers' Compensation and/or Social Security laws. The University pays the entire cost of this coverage and is automatic for all eligible employees who work a minimum of 30 hours per week, or are otherwise .75 FTE employees. The coverage begins after one year of full-time service, or if a new employee is transferring from another group disability plan. (If transferring from another group disability plan, the new employee must complete and submit the Certification of Previous LTD Coverage within 31 days of their date of full-time employment with WU.
