Our German Minor

Explore the art, history, language, and culture of German-speaking countries. Gain a deep understanding of the lives of other people. Minor in German Studies to develop skills for an interconnected world. 

Why choose a German Studies minor at Willamette? 

  • Connect outside the classroom. Join our on-campus German Club to build language skills and connect with fellow students about German culture and customs. Students can also join German Movie Night and other German Studies events.
  • Study abroad opportunities. Students can easily study abroad to deepen their connection to the German language and culture. Consider studying in Zurich, Baden-Württemberg, or Graz.
  • An interdisciplinary approach. Learn about different aspects of German culture to develop a comprehensive view of German people around the world.

Curriculum

Delve into the many rich facets of German societies – both past and present. Our course list includes classes covering German language, literature, and culture with courses taught in English and German.

  • GERM 241 German Cinema and Visual Culture

    In this course, students will acquire skills for engaging visual media in their social environments. Examine the important contributions of German cinema, from its pioneering beginnings to the present. Films will be considered in a broad cultural context where cinema is explored alongside other art forms. Consider the means by which these films tap into the desires, hopes, and fears of audiences and discuss the social role that they play.

  • GERM 333 Contemporary German Culture and Society

    Improve German language skills by exploring cultural, political, and everyday aspects of contemporary Germany. Themes and issues will include the role of Germany in the European Union, Ostalgie and German reunification, youth culture, literature, music, art, multiculturalism, cross-cultural comparisons, and the realities of the media world.

Program Requirements

Students pursuing a German minor will need to complete 20 semester hours in German courses:

  • GERM 232 Intermediate German II (4)
  • GERM 331W German Composition and Discussion (4)
  • GERM 333 Contemporary German Culture (4)
  • GERM 340 Introduction to German Literature (4)
  • Four additional German semester hours at the 400 level (4)
