University-owned computers currently run Sophos Endpoint, a centrally managed and fully-modernized AV Endpoint solution with Artificial Intelligence for protection against viruses, malware, and many of the threats encountered online and while using cloud-based storage and applications. WITS takes care of it all, so there's no need for you to update or install anything.
Personally-owned computers must also run AV software if they are to be used to access university files and data. Home users can run a FREE version of Sophos which is recommended for systems running Windows or MacOS. The free version is perfectly adequate but if you desire more advanced protection, a purchase option directly from Sophos is available. If you'd like to install it, or just want to know more, click the link below!
Although we recommend it, Sophos is not your only option for protection on your personal computer. If you have a current, mainstream AV or Endpoint Protection application on your computer, you should be in good shape. Here's a regularly updated list of the top 10 AV products for home use as an example.
*** NOTE!: Having more than one antivirus program active on your computer may result in serious performance problems. Uninstall other AV software (MalwareBytes, Symantec, Norton, Kaspersky, etc.) as soon as you have your desired AV solution up and running. Some play nicely with MalwareBytes, others do not.
Windows Defender (included with Windows) will automatically disable itself once a new AV application is installed, there is no need to uninstall it. Sophos and MalwareBytes are incompatible, be SURE to uninstall MalwareBytes before installing Sophos on your personally owned Windows computer.
