Statistics is a key element in today’s data-driven world. The statistics major at Willamette is designed to help you develop your critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability – skills that are essential for navigating real-world challenges. Having a balance of both technical and soft skills will prepare you to enter fields that are continuing to develop as you begin your career. You will gain insights that will allow you to anticipate change and learn to quickly adapt to technological advances.

Through courses in the Statistics program, you will gain proficiency in R, the most widely used programming language in data analysis. You will also delve into the world of statistical modeling and machine learning, with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in using these tools. The foundation of the statistics program, though, is gaining a strong understanding of mathematics and the curriculum reflects that. Students have the opportunity to explore classes covering Calculus II, applied statistical analysis, and inferential statistics.

Faculty takes a mentorship approach to teaching, offering opportunities for students to conduct graduate-level research alongside them. Not only does this model foster an environment where students and faculty can develop one-on-one relationships, but it allows students to gain relevant experience that will help them stand out when they apply for jobs or graduate school.
