Biography

Sarah Hughey is a lighting designer and recent transplant to Portland from Chicago, originally from southwest Missouri. In Chicago, she has designed lighting for productions at Writers Theatre, Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, Northlight, Victory Gardens, About Face, Steep Theatre, Court Theatre, Chicago Children's’ Theatre, and A Red Orchid, among many others. She is an Artistic Affiliate of American Blues Theater and was the resident lighting designer for Silk Road Rising. Regionally, Ms. Hughey has designed at City Theatre in Pittsburgh, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, St. Louis Black Repertory, and others. She is the recipient of a Joseph Jefferson Award for her work on Scorched (Silk Road Rising) and a nomination for The Iron Stag King (The House), and was recognized in 2013 with the Maggio Emerging Designer Award at the Merritt Awards for Excellence in Design and Collaboration.

Ms. Hughey holds an MFA in Stage Design from Northwestern University and a BA in Theatre from Missouri State. She was an adjunct professor and guest mentor in the MFA design program at Northwestern University from 2009-2016. She has also taught lighting design and mentored design students at Columbia College Chicago and North Central College in Naperville, IL.

Upcoming projects include A Christmas Memory and Major Barbara at Portland Center Stage, and The Brotherhood of the Monastic Order of Ancient Mariners Purges the Ills of Society Through a Reading of the Tales of Moby-Dick with Blair Thomas & Co. in Chicago and at the World Puppetry Festival in Charleville-Meziere, France.
