Biography

Mariann Samuel is the new Legal Reference and Instruction Librarian at the Willamette University College of Law. Mariann comes from the University of Georgia Libraries where she served as Head of Copyright and Scholarly Communications Services. There, she advised faculty and students on educational fair use and other intellectual property issues. During law school, she took an interest in criminal defense work. As a law student, she interned at the Public Defender's Office of the Western Judicial Circuit in Athens, Georgia, where she represented clients in state court. Also as a law student intern at a private criminal defense firm in Savannah, Georgia, Mariann conducted extensive research and drafting on complex felony cases. After graduating from law school, Mariann worked in the Eastern Judicial Circuit in Savannah, Georgia to represent clients in felony arraignments and probable cause hearings. She is excited to share her passion for legal research with the Willamette University College of Law community. Mariann lives with her husband Allan, and a stable, not-growing menagerie of their rescue pets in West Salem (4 dogs and 2 cats). Mariann holds a J.D. from the Mitchell Hamline School of Law, a Masters in Library and Information Studies (M.I.L.S.) from the University of Michigan, and an M.A. in English from the University of Toronto. She enjoys hiking and kayaking when not at work. She hopes to explore wind sailing opportunities at the Columbia River.
