October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Contact: Lisa J Logan

We invite the community to join us throughout the month of October, and always, in our work to end violence.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the impact of intimate partner violence, honor survivors, bring attention to the resources available to those affected, and promote a culture of prevention. The Gender Resource & Advocacy Center (GRAC) works throughout the year on our commitment to the well-being of our community. This October, we highlight our work with campus partners to raise awareness and support the efforts against all forms of oppressive violence.

The Sexual Assault Response Advocates (SARAs) and the GRAC are hosting a series of events and educational opportunities in collaboration with Alpha Chi Omega, the Bistro, Willamette Events Board, and the Residence Hall Association aimed at promoting understanding, encouraging prevention, and supporting those impacted by domestic violence. These initiatives start today and include: educational tabling, tie dye, Purple Thursday, Support & S’mores, healthy relationships trivia, and red flag movie night.

We invite all members of our community to participate in these events, share knowledge, and be part of the solution. Your voice matters in breaking the cycle of violence, and together, we can create a safer, more compassionate community for all.

If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, please don’t hesitate to seek help. Confidential resources available through the GRAC include the Confidential Advocate at confidential-advocate@willamette.edu or (503) 375-5361 and the SARAs at sara-resources@willamette.edu. The SARAs are in the GRAC from 4-9 pm Monday through Thursday and from 3-7 pm on Friday. Confidential support is also available in Bishop Wellness. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is (800) 799-7233, and the local organization, Center for Hope and Safety, is dedicated to supporting survivors. Their 24-hour hotline is (503) 399-7722. See the links below for a full list of university resources.

Let’s work together against violence and support a future where everyone can feel safe and valued.
