Update: the closing date for Manuel Izquierdo: Maquettes and Small Sculptures was Feb. 10 and the closing date for Manuel Izquierdo: Works on Paper has been extended to Feb. 17.

The Hallie Ford Museum of Art at Willamette University will present two exhibitions that explore different aspects of late Portland artist Manuel Izquierdo’s works. In the Print Study Center, Manuel Izquierdo: Works on Paper will present a range of Izquierdo's prints created from the late 1940s to the early 2000s. In the Study Gallery, Manuel Izquierdo: Maquettes and Small Sculptures will display a range of models and small sculptures that served as improvisational pieces and exercises that formed the basis for Izquierdo's larger pieces.

“Izquierdo was a key figure in Oregon’s golden age of modern sculpture,” says Professor Emeritus Roger Hull who organized these exhibitions. “He pioneered welded metal sculpture in the Pacific Northwest and became best known for his steel and bronze works that are marvels of adventurous form-making and stunning technical proficiency.”

These two exhibitions pave the way to the opening of the major retrospective exhibition, Manuel Izquierdo: Myth, Nature, and Renewal that will open on Jan. 19, 2013. Collectively, the three exhibitions celebrate the life and career of Izquierdo (1925–2009).

A full-color monograph, Manuel Izquierdo: Myth, Nature and Renewal, written by Hull, will be available in January. The book was supported by gifts from family and friends of Izquierdo, and supporters of Northwest art.

Support for the exhibitions has been provided in part by grants from the City of Salem’s Transient Occupancy Tax funds and the Oregon Arts Commission.
